Consciousness: A Biochemical Perspective

Thomas J. Nelson
Blanchette Rockefeller Research Institute
Johns Hopkins University, Montgomery County Center

Consciousness is one of the least understood concepts in contemporary neuroscience. After surveying prior approaches to consciousness, including current theories concerning possible connections between consciousness and quantum mechanics, a reductionistic approach to consciousness will be described. Arguments will be presented that a consistent definition of consciousness implies that consciousness may be present in a rudimentary form in all structures, including biomolecules, that process information.
