Neural Mechanisms of Attention

Ian Steele-Russell, from the
Department of Anatomy, Texas A&M University

The role of the neural mechanisms of attention will be described - particulalrly in the organization and structuring of the peripheral sensory record. Long-term attentional mechanisms involving the frontal and parietal cortex are well documented both in animal and human studies. Research will be described involving sustained attentional deficits following discrete lesions to Brodman homologue areas 6 an 8 in monkey. Recent work on an animal model of hypnotic pain modulation will also be considered. It will be argued that the fronto-parietal attentional system plays a critical role in both areas of research.
