Detection of
neurodegeneration and inflammation
in the brain by MRI and PET

Vasiliki Ikonomidou
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, George Mason University

Neurodegeneration, a term describing a wide range of processes that result in the loss of structure and/or function of brain neurons, is a main factor in a wide range of diseases of the central nervous system, and may be associated with processes preceding the development of clinical symptoms.

The talk will discuss techniques for detecting neurodegeneration in white matter with MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and some underlying inflammatory patterns that have been studied by means of PET (positron emission tomography) in patients with multiple sclerosis.
