FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES & CONSCIOUSNESS

by Menas Kafatos
University Professor of Interdisciplinary Science
George Mason University

One may attempt to produce a list of some fundamental principles on which physical theory is founded and explore their connection to the consciousness issue. This would provide another approach, different from but complementary to the whole debate of what constitutes consciousness which is often reduced to human consciousness issues. A first list includes simplicity, self- organization, complexity, complementarity and non-locality/wholeness. These principles may be pointing to the existence/interweaving of consciousness and the universe. We will explore some examples provided by physical theory.
