THE ROLE OF COMPUTING IN COGNITIVE SCIENCE

Larry Hunter
Krasnow Institute & National Library of Medicine

Since the invention of computers, computer scientists have claimed that computers have a crucial role in a scientific theory of mind. Yet after nearly half a century of research, that role is not yet clearly elucidated. Some (including Krasnow's own Jim Trefil) have become deeply skeptical. In this talk, I will try to make the case for computational theories, and sketch the contours of what I take to be an important new approach taking shape in the community that calls its research "simulations of adaptive behavior."
