BRAIN IMAGING OF CHILDHOOD ONSET NEUROPSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS

Jay Giedd, M.D.
Child Psychiatry Branch National Institute of Mental Health
National Institutes of Health

Many of the most severe neuropsychiatric disorders of childhood are hypothesized to be associated with subtle deviations from normal brain development, the anatomical manifestations of which are detectable by magnetic resonance imaging. In this talk I will provide a brief historical perspective of brain imaging and then discuss brain development in healthy children (with an emphasis on sexual differences in the brain) and contrast that to brain development in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, childhood-onset schizophrenia, Sydenham's chorea, and a relatively new pediatric disorder called PANDAS.
