The Joists and Tiers of Memory

Mortimer Mishkin
Laboratory of Neuropsychology,
National Institute of Mental Health, NIH

This talk with a poor and mysterious pun for a title will actually be about the neuroanatomy of memory. The "joists" refers to the division of labor between (1) a cortico-striatal system serving behavioral memory or habit formation and (2) a cortico-limbic system essential for cognitive memory, including recognition and recall. The "tiers" refers to some new evidence suggesting that the second system is organized hierarchically, with a first stage consisting of semantic or fact memory supported by the medial temporal cortex underlying the hippocampus, and a second stage consisting of episodic or event memory critically dependent on the hippocampus itself.
