DEFINING COGNITION IN WORK SETTINGS

Yan Xiao, PhD, Assistant Professor University of Maryland School of Medicine

When studying cognition in work settings one is confronted with the challenge of defining what is cognition. The difficulties in defining cognition can be explained by three key factors highlighted by numerous studies of cognitive activities in work settings: the intricate relationship between manipulation of physical objects and cognition, the continuity in temporal space, and the inevitable distributed nature of tasks among multiple individuals. In this talk I will describe strategies of defining cognition within the context of three studies conducted in two hospitals using various methods of data collection in work settings. Examples of analysis of videotaped real trauma patient resuscitation will be shared with the audience to illustrate the importance of defining cognition and recognizing the fundamental impact of the above-mentioned three factors on how cognition should be defined and how it could be studied.
