Cognitive and Brain Mechanisms of Episodic Memory:
A Source Monitoring Approach

Scott Nolde
Department of Psychology, Princeton University

The source monitoring framework (SMF) is a theoretical framework for describing and studying the processes associated with identifying the source (i.e., origin) of information. As applied to the study of episodic memory (i.e., memories relating to specific instances in one's past), the SMF is useful for understanding how people sometimes accurately remember the past (as well as for understanding why they sometimes fail). Discussed are behavioral experiments relating to the SMF and episodic memory. In addition, results from recent experiments using techniques for measuring cortical activity (i.e., Event Related Potentials and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to understand episodic memory are also discussed .
