Whether human cognitive and communicative abilities have their counterparts in nonhuman primates is still subject to argument. This seminar will present evidence, taken largely from studies of auditory communication processes in nonhuman primates, that important aspects of the human mind had an evolutionary history, and that mechanisms mediating the cognitive and communicative abilities of living nonhuman primates provide clues to the evolutionary origins of the human mind.
