Optical Studies of Neuronal Activity in CNS

Jian-Young Wu
Georgetown Institute for Cognitive and Computational Science
Georgetown University

Optical imaging with voltage-sensitive dyes is becoming a useful tool for examining neuronal activity in the central nervous system. The lecture will begin by explaining how to measure neuronal activity with light. Then the speaker will present two examples from his work and discuss with the audience how this method can help to understand more about the nervous system. The two examples are: 1) Monitoring many neurons simultaneously in an invertebrate "brain" during simple behaviors; 2) Measurement of population neuronal activity in mammalian neocortex. The speaker encourages the audience to ask questions during his speech and promises that there will be no mathematical equations or fancy terminology in the talk.
