Swiss Army Knife and Ockham's Razor

Yan M.Yufik
Institute of Medical Cybernetics, Inc.

Comprehension is "ability to grasp general relations of particulars" (Webster). What cognitive processes underlie this ability? This discussion will identify two contending metaphors of the mind, and outline a model of comprehension informed by the parsimony principle (Ockham's razor). The model is applied to improve decision making in complex tasks involving multiple variables and rapidly changing conditions.
