June 15, 2011: Tom and Jeannemarie Davis visit the Institute

Earlier this month, Jim Olds was host to former U.S. congressman Tom Davis and his wife Jeannemarie Davis. The Davis' have been staunch supporters of the Institute over the last several years and the congressman is a member of the Krasnow Advisory Board. The meeting included discussion of Krasnow's current and future goals with regard to research in neuroscience and computational social science.


June 5, 2011: Krasnow Phase II Move-in Begins

Krasnow's Phase II addition is completed and occupants have been moving into the new laboratory space. Shared instrumentation space allows collaborative research to be conducted in a variety of disciplines. Moving will continue throughout the summer as Krasnow welcomes new principal investigators.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for August.


May 30, 2011: Dr. Cioffi-Revilla is invited to speak in Taiwan

Dr. Claudio Cioffi-Revilla recently delivered a lecture at the 2011 Herbert A. Simon Lecutres on Computational Social Science in Taipei, Taiwan. The lecture series was by invitation at three universities: National Chengchi University, Tamkang University, and Tunghai University. The lectures provided an introduction and overview of computational methodology in social science, automated information extraction, complex systems, social network analysis, and social simulation.


May 10, 2011: Students Prepare for Exams

Dr. Rob Cressman, Assistant Professor in the department of Physics and Astronomy hosted an exam review session at Krasnow before closing out the academic year. The Krasnow lecture room was standing room only as Dr. Cressman gave his students the opportunity to ask last minute questions regarding the course content.


March 31, 2011: Krasnow Hosts Dr. Mengchun Xie

Dr. Xie is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Wakayama National College of Technology in Japan. Her research interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computational modeling and simulation. Dr. Xie asked to work in one of our labs operated by Dr. Kenneth DeJong, Krasnow's Associate Director and Professor of Computer Science. We welcome her to George Mason University and hope her experience with Dr. DeJong's lab and the Institute is a valuable one.


March 15, 2011: Krasnow Phase II Nears Completion

Krasnow anticipates the completion and delivery of the Phase II expansion space by the end of May. Communicating corridors have been established between the new and existing portions of the wing, providing clear views of the the new space. Furniture installation and initial cleaning has begun and will continue over the next few weeks.

 

The new wing expands the ability of Krasnow researchers to conduct translational neuroscience research. It is anticipated that an open house will be scheduled during the summer to celebrate the completion of the project.

The footprint of the building has grown by approximately 28,000 sq. feet since expansion began in 2005.

 

December 2, 2010: Building Construction Update

Krasnow Phase II continues its progress as the steel frames of Phase I and II are connected. New offices and laboratories are taking shape as the interior walls are being constructed. Additionally, crews have almost completed laying brick on the exterior facade. Over the next several weeks, Whiting Turner will be continuing interior construction to include erecting walls and laying flooring. Substantial completion of Krasnow Phase II should be in April 2011.

November 15, 2010: Dr. Cioffi honored for receipt of patent

At a recent event, George Mason Intellectual Properties (GMIP) honored a number of Mason patent recipients and inventors. One such recipient was our own Dr. Claudio Cioffi-Revilla, Director for the Center for Social Complexity. He was awarded a patent for "Anthropogenic Event Risk Assessment." The Institute applauds him on this honor.

November 1, 2010: Krasnow Institute Symposium

The Krasnow Institute is excited to announce its two new short courses to be offered in June of 2011. One week long, these intensive executive-level courses are offered in areas of the Institute's expertise: Computational Social Science & Policy, and Neuroscience & Policy. [Due to the unresolved federal budget situation in March and Aprinl and an overall challenging economic climate, the Krasnow Institute Symposium was canceled for 2011. Watch for it in summer 2012.]
