Burris, Ph.D.
John Burris has served as the 10th President
of Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin since August, 2000. Beloit College is a residential,
international liberal arts college with 1,300 students from 48 states
and 54 nations. It is ranked among the most international colleges in
the country and is one of the leading institutions in the U.S. in the
preparation of undergraduates who continue on to receive their doctorates.
Prior to his presidency at Beloit, Dr. Burris was director and CEO of
the world-renowned Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole on Cape
Cod from 1992 to 2000. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in biology
from Harvard University in 1971, attended the University of Wisconsin
at Madison in an M.D.-Ph.D. program, and earned his Ph.D. in marine biology
from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California
at San Diego in 1976.
In July 2008, Burris will assume the position of President of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund in Research Triangle Park, NC. The Fund is an independent, private foundation dedicated to advancing the biomedical sciences by supporting research and other scientific and educational activities.
