Fall 2001 Seminar Series in Place

This year, once again, the Krasnow Monday Seminar series features some of the finest scientific minds talking about the mind. Among others, Sally Boysen of Ohio State will be talking about great ape communication. Kirk Frey of the University of Michigan will be discussing non-invasive imaging of neurotransmitter system function in human subjects and William McCombie from Cold Spring Harbor will be reviewing his work on large-scale genomic sequencing. The seminars commence at 4:00PM in the Krasnow Seminar Room and are open to all. Coffee, tea and refreshments are served at 3:30PM. For more information please check our seminar schedule.

Kathleen Wallman Joins Krasnow Board

Kathleen M.H. Wallman has been elected to the Board of Trustees for the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study, the independent scientific research institute based on the campus of George Mason University.

Wallman is chief executive officer of Wallman Strategic Consulting, LLC, which specializes in advising companies and organizations in the areas of video, voice and data communications and information technology. In addition to the Krasnow Institute, Wallman also serves on the boards of Allen Telecom, Inc., Foliofn, Inc., Micromuse, Inc., The Consumer Energy Council of America Research Foundation and The Precursor Group. She is also a principal of the Critical Infrastructure Fund, L.P., which specializes in telecommunications and infrastructure investments.

Previously, Wallman served as Deputy Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and counselor and chief of staff of the National Economic Council, as well as deputy counsel to the President in the Office of the White House Counsel. Wallman also served as chief of the Common Carrier Bureau at the Federal Communications Commission. Prior to her government service, Wallman was a partner at the Washington, D.C. law firm of Arnold & Porter.

" Kathy's legal, business and public service background will be a great asset to the Krasnow Institute," said Mark P. Friedlander, board chairman of the Krasnow Institute. "As the Krasnow Institute continues to grow in both size and stature, our board will play an increasingly important role in providing strategic vision and direction for the growth of the scientific program."

Wallman will join a board of trustees which includes: Julius Axelrod, nobel laureate; Edward Braithwaite, former UN ambassador and author; John Burris, president of Beloit College; Mark P. Friedlander, attorney and author; Robert W. Gambino, consultant and former director of the U.S. Selective Service; George W. Johnson, former president of George Mason University; Patricia M. Kluge, philanthropist and chief executive officer of Kluge Investments, Ltd., Harold Morowitz, author and Robinson Professor of Biology and Natural Philosophy at George Mason University; William A. Nitze, former Assistant Administrator for International Activities, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; Virginia Pomata, chairwoman of the Commonwealth of Virginia's Alzheimer's and Related Diseases Commission; Gene Samburg, chief executive officer and founder of Kastle Systems, LLC; Maurice W. Scherrens, Senior Vice president of George Mason University; Peter N. Stearns, provost of George Mason University; and Thomas N. Wise, Chairman of Psychiatry at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Spring Seminar Series Set

The Krasnow Spring seminar series is now underway. Among the distiguished speakers will be Alan I. Leshner, Ph.D., Director, National Institute on Drug Abuse, NIH and Harvey B. Pollard, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics, U.S.U. School of Medicine, National Institutes of Health. All of the talks take place on Monday afternoons at 4PM in the Krasnow Seminar Room.

Patricia Kluge Joins Krasnow Board

Patricia M. Kluge has been elected to the Board of Trustees for the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study, a private scientific research institute based on the campus of George Mason University.

" Patricia Kluge's breadth of knowledge will make her a valuable addition to the Krasnow Board of Trustees," says Mark P. Friedlander, Chairman of the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study. "As the Krasnow Institute enters its second decade, it is now recognized as one of the world's most innovative cognitive research institutes. Ms. Kluge's modern approaches to bringing art and the creative process together will serve the institute well as it continues to grow in reputation."

A resident of Charlottesville, Ms. Kluge is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard and Kluge Investments Ltd. In addition to the Krasnow Institute, Ms. Kluge sits on the boards of the Virginia Environmental Endowment, the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation, and New York University, and is a member of the Dean's Council at the Tisch School of Arts.

Ms. Kluge is also the founder of the Virginia Festival of American Film at the University of Virginia and established the Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center, the Francis Hooks Scholarship and after-school programs for underprivileged children. She has also served on the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia.

" The Krasnow Institute is an excellent example of the innovative approach to higher education and research at George Mason University," says Alan Merten, President of George Mason University. "Ms. Kluge's commitment to civic and cultural affairs, especially within the Commonwealth of Virginia, will only serve to further distinguish an already world-class Board of Trustees of the Krasnow Institute."

Ms. Kluge becomes the 14th member of the Krasnow Board of Trustees. Other members are Mark P. Friedlander, Chairman of the Krasnow Institute, attorney and author; A.
