Krasnow Institute Advisory Board Meets

The Krasnow Institute Advisory Board had its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at the Institute. The Board will advise Jim Olds on strategic issues and will generally meet quarterly. All current members were present: John Burris, Steve Crocker, Patricia Kluge, Virginia Pomata, Sara Stanfill.

Krasnow Institute Advisory Board Adds New Member

Elizabeth Marincola, Executive Director of the American Society for Cell Biology, has been elected to the Krasnow Advisory Board. Ms. Marincola received her MBA from Stanford University and has extensive experience in biomedical policy, association management and communicating to the public the excitement inherent in basic biomedical research. Krasnow Director Jim Olds welcomed Ms. Marincola to the Board stating, "Ms. Marincola will complement the expertise of the Board while at the same time increasing our Institute's profile in the biomedical community. We are extremely pleased to welcome her to the Krasnow Advisory Board."

Krasnow Institute Recruits two Principal Investigators

The Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study continues the expansion of its research program with the successful recruitment of two new principal investigators, Drs. Susan Bachus and Layne Kalbfleisch. Dr. Bachus' research program focuses on the molecular mechanisms that underlie diseases such as schizophrenia. Dr. Kalbfleisch will strengthen the Institute's efforts at the juncture of neuroscience and education. Each of these new investigators will complement the trans-disciplinary work of the Institute while at the same time facilitating collaborations with existing Krasnow research in novel directions.

Krasnow Institute Merges with George Mason

On April 8 the Board of Trustees of the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study approved a merger with George Mason University, resulting in a new name for the institute: the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study of George Mason University.

GMU Biosciences PhD program moves forward

The Biosciences PhD Program for George Mason University has been recently approved by SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia). The integrative program offers five concentrations: Integrative Neuroscience; Functional Genomics and Biotechnology; Bioethics; Astrobiology; and Systematics and Evolutionary Biology, along with a coordinate in Bioinformatics in the School of Computational Science. It draws from the research strength of about 60 faculty in 8 departments in The College of Arts and Sciences; Bioinformatics in the School of Computational Science and Integrative Neuroscience from The Krasnow Institute.
