Basket Cells (DG bc)

Main references (data with "?" refer to a reasonable guess; with "??" to a total guess):
Morphology: Freund and Buzsaki, 1996; Hillman, 1979, Mott et al., 1997.
Number and connectivity: Patton and McNaughton, 1995.
Biochemistry and physiology: Patton and McNaughton, 1995; Koh et al., 1995; Freund and Buzsaki, 1996.

Type: Interneurons, inhibitory (GABA)
Number: 10,000
Location (Dentate Gyrus): soma and axon in granule layer, dendrites in molecular layer and hilus.

Explicit morphological data: Southampton archive (cells 250, 256).

Notes: Basket cells are themselves polymorphic (pyramidal and non-pyramidal), but we only model non-pyramidal. Morphology is assumed very similar to chandelier cells and to bc and cc of other sub-fields.

Connectivity:

Axonal output (number of cells contacted, with one synapse unless specified; in parenthesis: number of cells of that type):
14,200 DG gc x2 (1,000,000)

Axo-somatic input:
GABA ?350 SHP on soma and dendrites (climbing)

Dendritic input:
Glu 800 DG gc (1,000,000) on basal dendrites ?!
Glu 1000 DG mc (30,000) on shaft?
Glu 1000 EC (200,000) on shaft?
GABA 150? DG mopp (10,000) on shaft? [Freund and Buzsaki, 1996, report no connections]
